The "rain" in matsutake refers to the spores of the fungus' fruiting bodies, which fall from the fungal folds like a shower of rain. Matsutake mushrooms will only scatter spores freely when they are at their most mature, but years of overharvesting have made it difficult for them to grow to maturity, and climate anomalies have made their growth even more severe. Especially in this particular summer of 2022, the extreme drought made the "spore rain" absent from the forest along with the rain.
The spores are as tiny as dust, almost unnoticeable. But they are all around us and are really connected to the network that sustains us, and the spores reflect the changes in the Matsutake trade and climate. So "Matsutake Rain " is based on a study of the growth and trade of Matsutake in Yunnan, and examines the ecological and trade networks built on them from the perspective of a spore. It is a warning from the spore in the context of the climate crisis.
